Spark coolers

A Spark Cooler is a passive spark mitigation device designed to reduce the temperature of incandescent particles generated during metal processing and other low-load material handling applications operating under non-explosive conditions. It is typically installed upstream of the dust collector to provide an additional level of ignition source mitigation by lowering the thermal energy of sparks before they enter the filtration system.

Spark Coolers are available in a range of duct diameters to accommodate different airflow requirements and dust collection system capacities. Typical sizes range from Ø125 mm to Ø1000 mm nominal diameter, allowing integration into small extraction systems as well as larger industrial ventilation and dust collection installations.

The Spark Cooler operates by introducing controlled turbulence into the process airflow, increasing the residence time of sparks and hot particles within the duct system. This extended exposure allows greater heat transfer from the incandescent particle to the surrounding air stream through convection. The induced turbulence also disrupts the localized thermal boundary layer, or thermal bubble, surrounding the spark, allowing cooler process air to more effectively interact with the particle surface and accelerate temperature reduction.

By reducing spark temperature and thermal energy, the Spark Cooler helps minimize the risk of ignition within downstream dust collection equipment and provides effective ignition source mitigation. However, it is not an active extinguishing system and should not be considered a standalone fire suppression device where complete spark elimination or absolute ignition source control is required. Applications involving combustible dust hazards, explosive atmospheres, or critical fire risks should incorporate additional engineered protection measures based on the specific hazard assessment and applicable safety standards.
